Recently, I have been on the down hill in my current mascara, (Tarte’s waterproof Lights camera Flashes) so I have been on the look out for something new; something with a soft applicator and one that will give me options. I wanted to use one masccara for more dramatic looks as well as natural looks. One overall mascara is all I wanted – that’s not too hard to ask for… is it?
The other night my mum came home with a nice goody bag and in it was the new mascara by Rimmel London that was designed by Kate Moss herself. From the looks of it, the mascara is simply called ‘Kate Mascara’ which is a part of the Scandaleyes range. The colour that was sent to me was 004 Eye Rock Jet Black, but I believe that it also comes in three other colours; 005 Eye Rock Sapphire (A blue colour), 006 Eye Rock Amethyst (A purple colour) and 007 Eye Rock Emerald (a green colour).
For this review I am going to take a different approach by breaking the mascara down into its packaging, wand, formula, performance and then a final verdict.
They say ‘never judge a book by its cover’ but really, that is what we mostly do with a new product when we are deciding whether to buy it or not. Appose to some of Rimmel’s other mascara packaging, this one is very simplistic with a reflective silver background and a bright red colour for the wording.
The contrast between the red writing and the silver backdrop is quite a difficult one, as it is hard to read the writing at some points. However, it is not completely unreadable. It just takes a little extra time, especially with the smaller writing on the back.
The clasp which locks the wand in place when it is not in use is incredible. It is the strongest I have ever experienced which is awesome. A strong clasp means that not only will it not leak in your bag when you travel or take it with you for touch ups, the formula will be less likely to dry out. Of course try to avoid over pumping the mascara when using it (dipping it back into the tube for more formula) as this pushes air into the tube which causes the formula to dry out. For this mascara, I usually can get a whole eye and a half when I’m going for a dramatic look from one pump. A natural look takes me one pump maximum.
This wand is one of the most unique wands I have ever come across. It is described as a ‘broken heart brush’ and is supposedly similar to one of their mascaras released in Autumn 2014. Rimmel describes this wand as:
‘Our first broken heart-shaped brush creates a fringe of big, curvy, rockin’ lashes. This cleverly-shaped applicator twists and curves to hug the lash line; the thin tip grabs hard-to-reach inner lashes, while the amplified base pulses lashes with incredible volume and curve. Lashes are plumped and lifted in one clean stroke.’
In all honesty, I don’t fully understand the wand just yet. I can see my lashes become thicker and longer, however I do not understand which side and part of the wand creates each effect. I feel as though I need an instruction manual just to know how to get the best effects from the wand. The smaller end of the wand is certainly incredibly handy when trying to coat those lashes that are more towards the tear duct.
The mascara’s formula is something that I am still undecided about. The formula is quite a damp consistency to the point where it’s almost too damp, but it coats each lash better than any other mascara. However, I find that the application takes forever with this formula because it has a tendency to flick all over the lid, which is never pleasant for anyone! In saying this, it does dry quickly, so if you are willing to sit and squint for about thirty seconds then this mascara will be perfect for you!
Now my natural lashes are not the longest or the thickest, however, with this mascara it easily fakes that I have natural lashes that everyone wants! The heart shape wand helps to even out the lashes and make them spread naturally and without looking like spider legs. It also holds a natural curl throughout the day even without prior curling.
The mascara is also very long lasting. When I have 12 hour days at university and work, once I’m home it is obvious that it is still on. It doesn’t flake too much either which is awesome.
Overall, this mascara is incredible for the drugstore. It combines both a thickening mascara and a lengthening mascara which makes life easier so you don’t have to apply two different mascaras. I love the fact that the mascara looks like it’s going to last for a long time, not just on the lashes but in the bottle.
I think the mascara is best applied with a card protecting the mascara from transferring onto the lid. But despite that small downfall, the mascara is one of my favourites. It will definitely be one that I will rebuy time and time again. So as long as you have a card handy, this mascara is perfect!
